Frequently Asked Questions
Is your grass similar to carpet or astro-turf?
No. It's actually synthetic grass combined with sand and recycled crumb rubber. The fibers are 1.5" to 2.5" long depending on the product. A unique blend of rubber crumb and sand is spread over the top of the synthetic grass. This anchors the synthetic turf securely in place and makes it look and feel just like natural grass.
What is the life expectancy of the grass?
The turf comes with a limited 5-year warranty; actual life expectancy is 20-30 years.
Where can our grass be installed?
Virtually anywhere that natural grass is able to grow!
It can also be installed in any area that natural grass can't grow (ex: desert areas and extreme cold climates)! All you need is a fairly level surface with a porous base that will allow the rainwater to seep into the ground through the perforated holes in the backing of the lawn grass. Since most of the rainwater drains directly through the turf, it is not necessary to "crown" your surface.
What holds the turf down?
The turfs own weight will usually be enough (approx 1/2 lb per sq ft), but some infill is required to help the fibers stand up naturally to help prevent "matting", and this infill will additionally assist in weighing the turf down so it doesn't shift or move. A combination of sand and rubber infill seems to be the most popular. Many prefer the "soft" feel of rubber granular infill for where use is greatest, and sand infill (it's less expensive) for those lawn areas less frequently used.
How is our grass different from other synthetic turf?
Our turf fibers have been manufactured to resemble real grass. The turf fibers have been curled and spring-set to help prevent "matting" over time. The fiber component consists of UV protected "polyethylene," which is the softest fiber component in the industry. There has been extensive research and development to get these advanced fibers to the point they are today. Please refer to the section labeled "Products" for additional Product information. Specifically patented by Mirage Outdoor Concepts for exclusive use of its individual dealerships.
What happens when it rains or snows?
During the manufacturing process, our turf is specifically perforated with holes engineered to accommodate the normal drainage requirements of rainstorms and snowstorms. The water simply drains through the small drainage holes into the Earth. The sand and rubber infill will help to absorb and hold the water which will eventually drain through. During heavy rains some water will run off the top of the surface just as it would with natural grass or dirt. This actually is a big advantage over rock, since the infill will allow for evaporation, while the perforated holes allow for vertical drainage, compared to that of rock alone.
Can the grass be sculptured around walkways, pools, plants, or trees?
Yes, just like real sod grass.
What size or shape can the grass be constructed?
Just about any size or shape can be easily constructed.
Can you walk on the grass?
Yes, of course, just like any real grass yard. Our special shock absorbing backing, coupled with the spring action memory designed fiber, makes our surface very resilient. Our fibers are strong, smooth, soft, and forgiving.
Can your kids play on the Grass?
Yes, just like a real lawn, but whether the grass is real or synthetic, safety when children are playing should be everyone's first concern although it may feel and seem softer than real grass.
Are synthetic lawns pet friendly?
Yes, and probably safer than most natural lawns considering the pesticides and grow chemicals used in natural lawns. Both dogs and cats prefer to go to the bathroom on natural landscape. They are able to sense that the synthetic lawn is not natural, and in most cases will resort to other natural areas.

What if my pet has an accident on the synthetic lawn?
Simply remove it by picking it up much like you would on a natural lawn and spray it off with a garden hose.
What if my dog has a digging problem?
It is impossible to determine how a dog that has a digging problem will react to a synthetic lawn. However, it should be known that constant digging can damage the synthetic turf much like it would any natural turf. It would be best to address the pet's habit prior to installing a synthetic lawn.
Will a synthetic lawn mold?
A synthetic lawn will have no more mold content than that of a natural turf. Precautions are taken during the base construction of our synthetic lawns to address a proper drainage using moisture resistant materials.
Are synthetic lawns flammable?
Synthetic lawns are no more flammable than a healthy green natural lawn, and much less flammable than a dry natural lawn.
What about color fade?
Our synthetic lawns are treated with an Ultra Violet protector after installation. Working as a type of sun screen, this can be repeated every year and extend your basic warranty from 5 years to 8 years.
How would I remove tree droppings and leaves from my synthetic lawn?
Tree droppings and leaves can be removed with a simple leaf blower. More stubborn droppings such as food and drink spills can be cleaned using a garden hose.
I read a news article or viewed a recent news segment that indicated some synthetic lawns sold by Ace Hardware, Lowe’s and Astro Turf contain excessive amounts of lead from the liquid chromate used in the construction of these turfs. Do your Mirage Turf products contain liquid chromate or excessive amounts of lead?
No. Mirage Turf has adopted a safety first guideline in the construction of their products that include rigorous quality control and safety testing in all their materials and products. These tests are relating to carpet style turfs and professional playing fields.
